  • Creating your resume in Microsoft Word

    This Technology Training session will give you the basic skills needed to prepare your resume in Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word is available to users, in the San Diego Public Library’s Central Library Computer Lab. At the end, there are also some references to some resume books available from the Library.

    Creating Your Resume

    What you will need to have before you can create your resume:

    Your Personal Information

    • Name and address.
    • Where they can contact you: phone number, fax number, email.

    Employment History

    • Where you have worked: company name, address, and phone number.
    • When: month and year you started and left.
    • What your job title was: salesclerk, assistant, manager, etc.
    • Supervisor: name and job title.

    Education History

    • Where did you go to school: high school, community college, college, job training, etc.
    • When did you attend: first and last month and year.
    • Any awards, certificates and degrees you have received, etc.

    Etc.

    • Hobbies.
    • Computer skills: list the programs you are experienced in using.
    • Languages: any other languages besides English that you can speak or write.

    References: a reference should be either someone who knows your work skills or has known you for 3 years or more.

    • Name of your references.
    • Phone numbers or addresses where your references can be contacted.

    Starting Word

    To create a resume using Microsoft Word, you will need to start the Word program. To do this, double-click on the Word icon.

    Now click once on File, then click New.

    A window will open that looks like this, make sure to select Other Documents to get the files for a resume.

    You will then select the file you want to use by double-clicking on the icon. This will open the file for you to either change or create. You will need to choose between Contemporary Resume, Elegant Resume, Professional Resume orResume Wizard.
